8w4d, The Newest American

It was a long day in the car: three hours each way to the U.S. Consulate in Bordeaux (the consulate in Toulouse - a mere 1 1/2 hours away - doesn't have a consul right now - I was advised "maybe by September" if I wanted to wait. No, thank you!) to register Sophie's birth and apply for her passport and Social Security card.

Silly me, I thought that I would just have to flash my passport and hers would be forthcoming! After a lot of paper-shuffling, photo-taking and fretting that I had everything, we completed the process. Her passport will arrive in a mere two weeks, and the SS card will take about two months. I'm more concerned with being able to leave the country on a moment's notice :)

I wanted to get a pic at the consulate, but someone went into meltdown mode and we fled. The poor consul, administrative assistant and security guard . . .

This pic was taken after we got back to the house - I love her expression!

That expression caused me to burst into spontaneous laughter and hand clapping (clappity, clappity, clappity). Could she be more precious? No. No, she could not. And don't get me started on that sweater. :)
