Five Days Old, Homeward Bound

Sophie left the hospital wearing the same gown (embroidered by Aunt Linda) that I wore home as a newborn:

Three Days Old, Offline

Pascal is leaving on a short road-trip today - with the laptop! I KNOW! - leaving me internet-less until we're released.

French television just isn't as interesting . . .

She snoozed the afternoon away, which I'm afraid will haunt me in the wee hours of tonight . . .

39w5d, New Kid On The Block

Sophie Claire joined us at 3:55 this morning, weighing in at 7.1 lbs (3220 g) and standing tall at 18.9 inches (48 cm).

My water broke at 10:30 last night, just as we were starting to watch French Kiss. After I determined that I had NOT peed myself, I told Pascal that perhaps the party was starting.

Contractions started at midnight and I seriously thought we would be able to sleep a little before heading to the hospital. My hope was that the longer I held out at home, perhaps I could avoid the epidural.

We left the house around 1:30 and I made Pascal stop twice along the way so I could walk the contractions out. Good thing there was no one else on the road!

We arrived at the hospital around 1:45 and I was already dilated to 6 cm. At that point, the midwives said it could be another four hours to reach 10 cm and I asked for the epidural.

The anesthesiologist took his time arriving, setting up, etc. and I had reached 8 cm by the time he was ready to install the port, around 3. I still wanted the drugs because two more hours of that intense pain?!? I didn't think I would make it.

A few good pushes, plus the help of an episiotomy, and at 3:55, Sophie was placed on my chest.

To say we are thrilled is an understatement!

Pascal went home to take a nap (and we also had Maurice's car, since ours is in the shop) and Sophie and I hung out in our room, staring at each other. I tried to nap, but it's hard.

Pascal returned with Maurice before lunch for a visit and Maurice got to meet his first grandchild. He showed as much excitement as only Maurice can :)

I will post a pic as soon as it's possible.

38w1d, Tension

My 9th month appointment earned me a trip to Labor&Delivery, because my tension (blood pressure) was a little high at the beginning of the appointment. By the end of the appointment, it had dropped a little, but combined with my swollen feet and ankles (I blamed the heat), I got a pass to L&D.

After 1/2 hour of monitoring the baby's heart rate and my blood pressure, I was released. Whew! I didn't relish the thought of staying at the hospital until the baby is born.

The baby has gained a few grams, weighing in at 2.8 kg (6.2 lbs), and I am under strict orders to keep my feet up as much as possible and limit my trips up and down the stairs.
